It All Began in the Skies

AMSOIL was founded by Lieutenant Colonel Albert J. “Al” Amatuzio, a decorated U.S. Air Force fighter pilot. During his military career, Amatuzio observed that jet engines relied on synthetic lubricants because they provided superior performance under extreme conditions. This sparked his interest in developing similar advanced synthetic oils for automotive engines.

In the 1960s, Amatuzio began experimenting with synthetic formulations, drawing on his aviation background to design lubricants capable of withstanding heat, friction and demanding operational environments far better than conventional petroleum oils.

The First API-Certified Synthetic Motor Oil (1972)

In 1972, AMSOIL achieved a breakthrough: the first synthetic motor oil in the world to earn API service classification. This milestone set the stage for a new era in engine lubrication and established AMSOIL as a pioneer in synthetic oil technology.

The 1972 Signature Series product became the foundation for AMSOIL’s reputation for extended drain intervals, enhanced engine protection and unmatched performance.

Growth Through the 1980s and 1990s

As synthetic oil technology gained acceptance, AMSOIL expanded its product lines to include:

• Diesel and heavy-duty truck oils
• Gear lubes and transmission fluids
• Fuel additives and engine cleaners
• Filters and bypass filtration systems
